Airtightness for a ceiling

This Airtightness for a ceiling project had a serious air ingress problem and suffered from poor insulation.

Where the rafters meet the facia and soffit boards, air was blowing along the rafters and into the room through gaps in the sheeting. There was only 50mm of fibreglass insulation.

The ceiling was removed along with all of the original insulation. We then upgraded the insulation to 100mm rockwool and 100mm of xtratherm phenolic foam rigid insulation.

An Airtight membrane was fixed to the rafters and taped to the walls to seal the building. Airtight tape is used to seal all joints.

Extra care must be taken at all junctions and at windows to ensure the envelope is sealed correctly.

The ceiling is then counterbattened and new sheeting is fixed to the battens.
